Shipping Ice Cream and Reducing Melt Rates

Summer is coming, and ice cream is a popular treat that people enjoy all over the world. However, shipping ice cream can be a challenge, especially in these warmer months of the year. Ice cream is a perishable product that needs to be kept at a cold temperature in order to maintain its quality. If ice cream melts, it can become a sticky mess and lose its flavor.

There are a number of challenges that shippers face when shipping ice cream. One challenge is the need to maintain a cold chain. The cold chain is a system that ensures that food products are kept at a safe temperature throughout the entire supply chain. This can be difficult to do when shipping ice cream, as it needs to be kept at a temperature of -1 degree Fahrenheit or below.

Another challenge is the need to protect ice cream from damage. Ice cream is a fragile product that can easily be damaged during shipping. This can happen if the ice cream is not packed properly or if it is exposed to extreme temperatures.

Finally, shippers need to be aware of the "melt rate" when shipping ice cream. The melt rate is the percentage of ice cream that melts during shipping. This can vary depending on a number of factors, such as the type of ice cream, the packaging, and the shipping conditions.

Melt Rates and Cost Structure

The melt rate is an important factor that shippers need to consider when pricing their products. Shippers need to factor in the cost of replacing any ice cream that melts during shipping. The melt rate can also affect the shipping time, as shippers may need to use a slower shipping method in order to ensure that the ice cream arrives at its destination in good condition.

There are a number of things that shippers can do to reduce the melt rate of ice cream. One thing that shippers can do is to use insulated packaging. Insulated packaging helps to keep the ice cream cold and prevents it from melting. Shippers can also use dry ice or gel packs to keep the ice cream cold.

Shippers can also reduce the melt rate by shipping ice cream in smaller quantities. This will help to reduce the amount of time that the ice cream is exposed to heat. Shippers can also ship ice cream during the colder months of the year. This will help to reduce the risk of the ice cream melting.

Finally, shipping ice cream with a logistics partner that specializes in frozen products and that has accurate temperature tracking capabilities will not only ensure reduced melt rates, but also add peace of mind throughout the process.

By taking these steps, shippers can help to reduce the melt rate of ice cream and keep their customers happy.

Shipping ice cream can be a challenge, but it is possible to do it successfully. By following the tips in this post, shippers can help to reduce the melt rate of ice cream, avoid expensive damage and reshipments, and keep their customers happy.
